The National Curriculum assessment usually refers to the statutory assessments carried out in primary schools in England, colloquially known as standard attainment tests ( SATs ). The assessments are made up of a combination of testing and teacher assessment judgements and Since 2016 children have been given scaled SATs scores (replacing the National Curriculum levels used previously). This scoring method is widely used for school assessments across the world. To calculate a child's scaled score, their raw score – in other words, the actual number of marks they achieved – will be converted into a scaled score. The next time your child will take SATs will be in Key Stage 2 in Year 6, aged 11.

In total, the SAT math test is 80 minutes long and includes 58 questions: 45 multiple choice questions and 13 grid-in questions. The multiple choice questions have four possible answers; the grid-in questions are free response and require the test taker to provide an answer.

When you go from an SAT score of 680 to a 1110—just a range of 430—you're going from a straight D to an A. For students who are near the median of their class or a bit below, SAT scores and class grades both have decent resolution.
